Anonymous asked: Hi! I plan on getting box braids next month to wear for the rest of my transition. I know micros are damaging, but do you think that box braids would be okay? Also, how do you suggest keeping braided hair moisturized?

Back when I was in high school (EONS ago!), I stopped relaxing my hair and wore box braids in order to transition.  They were a great method of transitioning that worked well with my active lifestyle.  Keeping your hair moisturized is super easy.  Make sure that when you get braided up, you have a leave in conditioner in your hair.  I used to spritz my hair with water in the mornings (and in the evenings before bed if need be) and applied oil on top of that.  This minimized the build up (along with regular washing) on my scalp and at the base of the braid.  I hope that helped!

My Natural Hair Wash and Go Routine

I live for the wash and go (WnG)!  I love having my hair out and looking as it was meant to look.  My hair can get crazy — it’s multi-textured, has three different curl patterns going on, and the placement of these curl patterns are not at all symmetrical — and I love it!!!  Well, I learned to love it.  :-)  I find WnGs to be the easiest style for me to complete.  When I had relaxed hair, I would have it out, in a half ponytail, or a ponytail.  That’s it.  So flat twists, cornrows, rolls, etc., are things I have to practice and find rather difficult to do.  Thank goodness for the WnG!  Here’s what I do.

BGLH: Six Ways to Reduce Breakage While Washing Natural Hair

I follow all of these steps to a tee, and step four religiously!  The only additional commentary I would provide is in step three.  When I shampoo, I concentrate on my scalp, but I also rub a little shampoo down my hair shaft.  I clap my hands near the root and bring them down to the ends.  I’ll do that a couple of times to make sure I’m cleansing the entirety of my strands.  No me gusta product build up!
